This new series focuses on wounded warriors after returning to the States who have problems transitioning back to civilian life. That transition is even harder when they return with both physical and emotional traumas. Most don't have an outlet for their pain and unfortunately many take their own lives. In this book the author brings to awareness two programs that help veterans. Warrior Fight Club in real life is called Pugilistic Offensive Warrior Tactics which helps to improve the mental, physical and emotional well-being of veterans and military through MMA training, yoga and peer-to-peer support. Their goal is to help the returning soldiers deal with PTSD, social anxiety, depression, loneliness.. The hero of this book, Noah Cortez suffers from all of those after an IED takes both his sight and hearing on one side along with suffering from a TBI. The other program the author brings to awareness is art therapy, where the wounded warriors create painted masks to express how they feel. I looked this up and the masks the soldiers create are so rich with their pain and emotions – very heartbreaking and emotional to just look at.Even though Noah in the book has a wonderful supportive family he still struggles with everything. It's not until he gets involved with the Warrior Fight Club and being surrounded by fellow veterans who are going through what he is that he finds the comradery that he misses from serving in the Marines and also the support from men who have been through what he has.What didn't work so well for me in this book was the romance. Noah was a bit too messed up to be in a romance. In the authors others series the fast tracking romances worked, but for me with the seriousness of the subject matter in this book the romance just didn't work and really wasn't fair to the heroine. Don't get me wrong I was rooting for them to be a couple – I mean they'd been best friends for 20 years and who doesn't love a friends to lovers story but for me I couldn't get over the seriousness of Noah's mental health and that his issues should be more of a priority than the romance. SpoilersThe h and H have been best friends for over 20 years. The H has been serving in the military for the past number of years and has returned to town a broken man. He suffers from brain damage and depression. He’s lost sight in one eye and some hearing in one ear. Out of nowhere he and the h find themselves attracted to each other after they reunite. The H fights his more than friends feelings for the h because he doesn’t think he’s good enough for her. The two finally get their HEA after the H gets professional help to move on in his life.The story was too dark and depressing to be called a romance. The H was constantly going hot and cold on the h. I didn’t like the H much. The h was better off with the guy the H got jealous about towards the end of the book. There was too much of the story devoted to the H and him fighting his demons. The best friends to lovers was out of left field. The two never had romantic feelings for each other for twenty years and then boom..love?It wasn’t for me.
